Moore strikes fine form at the Carnival   Print  E-mail
Ryan Moore landed his second big win at the Dubai Racing Carnival when piloting the South African-bred filly Festive Style to win the inaugural running of the $130,000 Darley Cape Verdi Stakes at Nad Al Sheba yesterday.

Champion apprentice in the UK last season Moore won the first leg of the Maktoum Challenge three weeks ago aboard State Shinto. The Cape Verdi is the first leg of the Darely Distaff Series. The second leg is the Darley Balanchine Stakes over 1,777metres on Super Saturday, March 11.

Making only her second start in the UAE Festive Spirit clearly relished  the switch to turf as she dominated her rivals to win by six and a half lengths from stable companion Desert Glow, the mount of Australia's Kerrin McEvoy.

Bahraini raider A Touch of Frost, who led the 12-runner field for most of the 1600metre trip, stayed on for third place with the Peter Brette-trained Naughty Nell beaten a head back in fourth.

Festive Spirit was third to Catstar in the UAE 1000 Guineas 12 days ago but has come on strongly for that run on dirt. "She arrived late from South Africa and was not acclimatised one hundred percent," said winning trainer and former UAE champion Satish Seemar.

"We did not have too much time with her but she's a very straight filly, clean and very honest all the time."

Seemar said that he would wait to see how Festive Spirit came out of the race before making plans. The options are obviously the Balanchine or the UAE Oaks, both races to be run on March 11.

Earlier San Salvador showed what a gutsy performer he is when conjuring up a spirited effort under Gary Hind's strong handling to win the Al Sammak Conditions race over 1600m on dirt.

The race was fought out between two sprint veterans, seven-year-old San Salvador and Persuasivo Fitz (9) with the former prevailing by two lengths in a well-contested finish.

French trainer Erwan Charpy ended the meet on a high when he sent out Deodatus to score an impressive win in the Capannelle Racecourse Stakes. This was the fourth win of the season for the Darshaan six-year-old and must mark him out one of the season's most consistent and popular performers.

Earlier Dough Watson's Pomeranz, a fair perfomer in ireland, won the Al Thuraya Maiden over 1500m on dirt. Seemar's After The Ball was one and a half length's back in second with Watson's second runner Screaming Shamal third, one and three quarters of a length back.
