Mazin in winning spree at Sharjah   Print  E-mail
Mazin Al Kurdi he won four out of six races at the Sharjah Equestrian Club yesterday. Al Kurdi took his tally of wins for the season to 46, moving eight clear of nearest rival Doug Watson.

The former Syrian Derby winning trainer employed the services of three different riders, including Darragh O'Donohoe who rode two of his winners.

O'Donohoe won the Jebel Ali Racecourse handicap over 1200 metres with Quiton Fortune and followed up the success when he partnered Pony Express Hipolyte to win the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation handicap for Purebred Arabians.

Al Kurdi's other wins were supplied by Seb Sanders astride Attlee in the Dubai Racing Club handicap over six furlongs and by former champion jockey Gary Hind on Temeraire in the Emirates Racing Association handicap over 2000 metres.

Erwan Charpy, a former champion trainer notched his 21st winner of the season when Alreyam, ridden by Gary Hind, won the Al Asayl Management handicap for Purebred Arabians over 1200 metres.

Rod Simpson, from the Jebel Ali Palace Stables, claimed the only other success of the meet with Carat in the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club for UAE bred Purebred Arabians run over 1700 metres.

The win brought up a meet three-timer for Hind to take his tally for the season to 24. The second meet of the season at Sharjah, which attracted big fields for the six lower handicap races, typically provided some exciting finishes.

The afternoon got off to a bright start with Hind drawing first blood astride the lightly race four-year-old filly Alreyam who scored over the Willie Supple ridden Ajazz in a close finish.

Seb Sanders won the meet's second race astride Attlee who has not run with much success in recent starts at Nad Al Sheba and Jebel Ali. Rashid Bouresly's Bosra's Valentine finished second for Richard Hills while Dolbear claimed third place for Adi Selvaratnam.

The first of O'Donohoe's wins came with Quiton Fortune a convincing winner over the Willie Supple ride Maxi de Piboul in last of three sprints on the card.

His second, astride Pony Express Hipolyte, came at the expense of Lorman de Blaziet ridden by Gary Hind. Both the winner and runner-up are trained by Al Kurdi who has really dominated the season and looks almost certain to be declared champion trainer.
