Jockey's title race continues to be exciting   Print  E-mail

Ted Durcan the three-time champion took his tally of wins for the season to 35, one more than Mullen, with another former champion jockey, Willie Supple, also making his charge with a meet double. Supple, who holds the UAE record for the most wins in a season (75) is in third place on 31 winners.

Ted Durcan put himself in line for a fourth UAE jockey's title when riding a double at yesterday's Nad Al Sheba meeting, as trainer's Erwan Charpy and Satish Seemar shared the spoils with three wins each.

Durcan's double, which came aboard the Seemar-trained Mawaheb in the Dubai Palm Real Estate Cup and Tangeriano in the Creek Park Stakes, saw him seize the lead from championship hopeful Richard Mullen.

On a day of noteworthy individual achievements former champion trainers Charpy and Seemar totally dominated the six-race meeting.

Charpy maintained the fine run of form his Green Stables have found by winning the first three races on the card with Elmonjed, Modrik and Muwassi.

The Frenchman was also just denied a fourth straight win when Indian Dreamer, was just caught on the line by the fast-finishing Mawaheb, ridden by Durcan.

Supple supplied Charpy with two of his three wins in the blue and white colours of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Industry.

Supple, second jockey to Sheikh Hamdan, was aboard the winners Modrik in the Al Mazar Park Stakes over a mile and Muwassi, a compelling six length winner of the 1,400 metre Mushrif Park Stakes.

Bahrain-based French jockey Gerald Avaranche set the ball rolling for Charpy yesterday when he produced Elmonjed late to land the Safa Park Stakes over 1,400 metres.

One of the star performances on the night was delivered by the Argentinian-bred Tangeriano who completed his third straight win of the season when taking the featured Creek Park Stakes over 2000 metres.

The winner of last season's Dh500,000 Pearls of Dubai International Sales Graduate Stakes (Prestige), Tangeriano has benefited from a light campaign this season and is unlikely to race again until next year.

"He's a wonderful horse," said owner Mohammed Yousuf Al Budoor. "He's been making us happier and happier every time he runs. I want to take this opportunity to thank, Satish and all the staff at the stable who really work hard with him.

"He's been doing well since we purchased him at the sales last year. It's just fantastic to have a horse like him," Al Budoor added.

Later in the evening Mullen made a courageous bid to tie Durcan for the lead the top of the jockey's championship when he rode his heart out astride the Doug Watson-trained Classicist in the 2,400 metre Deira Park Stakes.

But Tachuri had just enough in the tank for his jockey Gavin Birrer to win by a quarter of a length.
