UAE Team gets boost from Jose Araya's golden goal   Print  E-mail
A 'golden goal' in the tie-breaker chukka by Juan Jose Araya, against unbeaten Team England, capped a fine rally by the UAE Team and gave them a good chance of meeting the same team again in today's final of the His Highness The President's Cup Polo Championship.

The UAE, who entered the final chukka trailing 3-5, scored twice in the last period and pushed the match into an extra chukka.

Araya, who had earlier scored three goals to play a lead role, struck early to force a result with his golden goal. With this win both Team England and the UAE Team have finished the league phase in the 'four-nation' championship with identical two wins and one loss records.

England have a plus 5 goal-average advantage while UAE are closely behind with a plus 4 advantage.

Team Argentina take on wooden spoonists Switzerland in the final league match and with a minus 3 goal average, the former may will have to win by a clear 7-goal margin to make it to today's final.

The UAE Team comprising Abdulla bin Desmal, Ali Al Merri, Araya and Fernando Bourdieu had to win against favourites Team England and they never always kept themselves within striking distance.

Araya started the match with a goal in the very first minute.

But England soon gained the upper hand. Both their UAE national players Ahmed Ali Al Nuaimi and Khalifa Al Hammadi had a good game while Solari and Harper also chipped in though they were playing for the second consecutive day.

Al Nuaimi equalised midway through the first chukka and Solari gave the England team and early 2-1 lead. In the second chukka, most of the action was confined to the middle but during a fine counter-attack, Araya levelled for the UAE.

Solari, also scored to help his team start the third chukka with a 3-2 lead.

Only two penalties were converted in the match and both came in the third chukka. Bourdieu, who had a rather quiet game came up with a big 40-yard penalty conversion to help the UAE draw level. But Harper replied with a similar effort and put his team ahead again.

Just before the hooter Khalifa Al hammadi was given the responsibility to take a 30-yard penalty and the promising UAE national made no mistake.

But in the final chukka, Araya and Bourdieu combined well to keep the pressure and scored a goal each to take the match into the extra chukka.

Araya again scored to virtually clinch a final berth for the UAE Team. Today's final will be played at 5.00 pm at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club.
