The Purebred Arabian horse, one of the most ancient breeds of all horses in the world, is known for its beauty, speed, strength and intelligence. However these noble animal were neglected for the most part as thoroughbreds were given more importance in sport. But the late President Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan brought about a big change in Arabian horse racing which soon began to make its presence felt. Breeding programmes
Shaikh Zayed introduced breeding programmes and in his stables some of the world's best Purebred Arabian horses were present. While encouraging UAE nationals to pursue racing, particularly Purebred Arabian horse races, Shaikh Zayed also carried this promotion onto the international arena.
One of the first international venues of repute that the Shaikh Zayed focussed on was Chantilly where the running of the historic annual derby was under threat due to lack of sponsors. Shaikh Zayed stepped in to support the prestigious event but insisted that there should be a race for Purebred Arabians included on the great Derby day.
It was agreed and soon not only in Chantilly but in all major racing centres of the world Shaikh Zayed ensured Purebred Arabian races were held on major race days.
Since then Arabian horse races in Copenhagen in Denmark, Duindigt in Holland, Deauville in France, Ostend in Belgium, Baden-Baden in Germany and New Market in England, Lethbridge in Canada, Delaware in US and many other centres in the region have held races for Purebred Arabian horses supported by Shaikh Zayed.
Today his efforts have resulted Purebred Arabian horses gaining a new stature and image at all international levels. Shaikh Zayed's constant support serves as a crucial link between the rapidly progressing modern UAE and its cultural and heritage roots that are steeped in equestrian traditions. |
