Dubai to have three representatives in the Arc   Print  E-mail

Three Dubai-owned horses were among an imposing field of 14 runners who stood their ground to contest tomorrow's Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-Lucien Barriere at Longchamp.

Mubtaker is set to represent Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Industry, while Doyen runs in the colours of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence.

However, Mubtaker's participation remains in doubt as trainer Marcus Tregoning has expressed some concern over the ground at Longchamp which is now described as very soft.

"The Arc takes some winning and we'd want as much as we can in our favour," Tregoning told the Racing Post. "I will go to France and walk the course on Sunday morning. If I decide it is too soft, then that will be that."

The third Dubai-owned horse challenging for Europe's most sought after middle distance race is the English Derby winner Kris Kin, owned by Dubai businessman Saeed Suhail.

Leading the market in the mile and a half contest, worth £539,662 to the winner is favourite Dalakhani, representing the Aga Khan, and the Irish raider High Chapparal.

Dalakhani, the mount Christophe Soumillon and High Chaparral, to be ridden by multiple Irish champion Michael Kinane have dominated the betting for the Group 1 race in recent weeks.

Trained by Alain de Royer Dupre Dalakhani won the Prix du Jockey-Club and comes into this race on the back of a win in the Group 2 Prix Niel, while High Chaparral won the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown last time.

Doyen, trained by leading French trainer Andre Fabre, finished second to Dalakhani on his last outing in the Prix Niel, but his rider Frankie Dettori believes he can extract revenge in tomorrow's big race.

"He's a nice horse. He's unexposed, he's improving," Dettori, who has won the last two Arcs with Godolphin's Sakhee and Marienbard, told attheraces. "He might not have the experience of some of the other horses, but he's a good horse in his own right.

"In the Arc you need a bit of luck and I think if we get a bit of luck he will run well."

Interestingly Godolphin are without a runner in this year's Arc, chosing instead to train their fire-power on some of the big middle distance races in Ameria.

Commenting on being drawn in stall four Dettori explained: "It depends what kind of horse you ride. I was drawn 17 on Sakhee, but Sakhee was a very uncomplicated horse. If you ride a horse that needs to be drawn into the race, obviously you want to be drawn inside. But I'm very happy and Longchamp has been kind to me in the past."
